Agreed. I just don't think that this sortie was that attempt. Seriously - if you were the Breen, would you honestly believe that that little task group is a strike force capable of taking the hub of the UFP? Even if the defense of Sol is as terribly neglected as we all think, what would the little huddle of Breen ships do when a couple dozen UFP warships did eventually come home?

I take it you mean the Breen strike force sent against earth? If so then I'm not sure what they were thinking. Maybe the morale thing but think Pearl Harbor. Those kinds of attacks don't really work so well. They have a 50/50 chance of back firing. Which, the Breen attack did in my thoughts. Even Damar thought it was a joke.

Seems to me that the Breen ended up putting themselves in something way over their heads. Once SF had a copy of the EDW it only took them about two weeks (space between the eps) to figure it out and fix the fleet. Besides that, its not the fleet that is the trouble but all those starbases around earth. Each one would cost a fleet to bring down and I really doubt that the EDWs would even tickle them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This brings up another point of the matter. The Dominion talked about attacking Earth but never mounted the plan. Even Martok couldn't believe that anyone was bold enough to do it and then... after reading the report... was even more shocked by how well earth handled the surprise attack. Though I think its really stupid that the Breen even got close to earth or Sol for that matter. The leader of the Klingon Empire (was he the leader at this point or just the Supreme Commander?) treats it as a major deal. Before the DW getting to Earth was pretty easy. The DW must have changed that a lot!

So.
Pre-DW we have 3 unmanned probes defending earth. Plus Starbase 74 if it happens to be on the right side of the planet for the attack.

Enter-DW we have at least 30 ships in orbit of Earth (Voy Endgame) and more likely twice that on patrol and just outside the system. Say 100 ships to make it even.

Post-DW... What would you put in Sol and around Earth?

The Breen were just doing a phycological attack, just like the Dolittle raid on Tokyo after Pearl harbour, did sweet fuck all damage but huge moral boost for the Americans and crush for the Japs.

If they were ever going to take Earth they would have the Dominion at their backs.

Pearl harbour: "Our attack is only a pinprick....but it'll be straight through their hearts."

Much the same here.

There was no attack (or ship), and the conclusion was reached purely on the evidence of the tactics described. Tactics that were specifically referred to as those of cloaked ships and the Breen.

They do. From Hero Worship:
PICARD
That's a strategy consistent with
a cloaked vessel. Romulan. Or
Klingon... But we're quite a
distance from either of their
territories.

DATA
The Breen have outposts in this
sector. The attack on the Vico
is consistent with their battle
tactics -- and their level of
technology.
it mentions an attack specifically, and technology and tactics generally. QED. Your quote.

There wasn't an attack - it had been reported by the kid they rescued, who was lying about it.

But in the quote you referenced, the people analyzing the "attack" were treating it as factual.

They were - this was before they figured out that he was lying.

No mention of the Breen having cloaks. What is mentioned is that they are in the area, that the tactics COULD match, and that it is at their LEVEL of tech.

The Tokyo Raid didn't cost the USN an entire fleet. It would be like the USN taking the losses of Pearl Harbor for the price of landing a few bombs in Tokyo. Not a good exchange rate IMO.

Not really, as the USN didn't have several thousand ships at that point. It'd be more like losing a single destroyer or cruiser.

Even loosing a single cruiser wouldn't be a good trade on attacking Tokyo.

INdeed, I agree with you there. I think the attack on Earth was a failed attempt at replicating the Doolittle Raid.
