Age is not a problem. The UN projects that by 2300 (yes, they have thought this far ahead) the average life expectancy in the first world will be around 106. Currently it is 75-80. So living to 140 will be no more remarkable than someone living to 110 now. Rare but not impossible.

We can safely assume that Archer had several beagles over his lifetime, so the beagle in question wasn't Porthos.

The question you have to ask is what was Scotty thinking? Weren't there lab mice (or lab beagles) to test his new transporter techniques on? Even an ensign's hamster or lieutenant's shitzsu would be better choices than an admiral's beagle.

As I said above, I'm not sure if Enterprise is canon in this timeline, Archer or no Archer. There had already been significant changes even before Nero showed up.
