So why didn't they do that every time, it would have saved a lot of red shirts. They did something like that with Wesley in 'The Game'.

Because that would require common sense and ST lacks that.

Right, what was I thinking, starfleet using common sense ::facepalm::Deepcrush wrote:Because that would require common sense and ST lacks that.
Re: Let's Fix The Galaxy Class Starship
To be fair, Wes did throw them off by setting his phaser to automatically fire at the force field to make security think he was trying to break through.
Although if the entire ship was trying to hunt me down, I'd be inclined to keep hold of my phaser. Also, if those force fields are any use, it's presumably impossible to just blast through one with a phaser.

But why did they never use them for other intruders, that game thing must have like given them brain cells or something, because with the game they figured out to do that, without it they just kill red shirts.

Re: Let's Fix The Galaxy Class Starship
Frankly, I think the big Galaxy class is a huge waste of resources. I look at modern navies and task forces are arranged to suit specific missions. I think it would be much smarter if you saw three vessels sent out on missions:
The fast scout (Intrepid). With it's more advanced scanning capability and capacity to respond quickly to an emergency (i.e. distress call), the scout is ideal for rapid response and spotting potential threats.
The muscle (Defiant). Every
The workhorse. An older vessel, the workhorse might be an Excelsior or Ambassador class, a ship that has been around for a while. It gives the other two more mission flexibility.
With three smaller ships you require less crew (although according to the site the TNG era Excelsior has a crew of almost eight hundred. Why? What is the point of all those upgrades if you still need to stuff your ship with so many people? As we saw with Voyager the point of upgrades is to have a smaller crew). Galaxies might be good to impress foreign dignitaries; "Oooh, look at how huge our ship is! And look, it's a pretty shade of pale blue!" But otherwise the luxury liners of space take too long to build and are prone to explode if you sneeze on the wrong console.

That leaves the fleet in a very poor position if it goes to war. Where are your heavy warship? Supply ships? Patrol and Escort and Training ships? Your list fails to meet the basic needs of any ST fleet.

Yes, since they are not group of total warriors they need ships that can be used if wars happen, but their main purpose would be exploration and not blowing everything up. Which is why a lot of ships are just all around ships, with no specific use. We have a couple of ships, that do have specific uses, Oberth, Defiant, but most are good for a lot of things.

Most of what has been said about the internals I agree with. I never disliked the external shape, though I would get rid of that sensor blind spot we saw in "Preemptive Strike"
Don't you hear my call, though you're many years away, don't you hear me calling you?
Re: Let's Fix The Galaxy Class Starship
Why did they have a sensor blind spot? That's stupid, why didn't they just put another sensor node, or whatever they call it, where that blind spot was, that probably wouldn't use up too much power or too many more resources.
