New film cast.
Here's a piece about the new cast playing the crew of the big E compared to the old:

Useful if, like me, you haven't heard of half of them. The one I have most doubts about is Karl Urban. He has screen presence, but IMO can't act for toffee and doesn't look right for McCoy. I was hoping for Gary Sinise, a great actor with a resemblance to DeForrest Kelly.

I like the choice of Pegg for Scotty. As far as the expected inability of the others, I, like Rochey, will wait to pass judgement. Just because we haven't seen, for example, Pine's or Urban's full range of chops doesn't mean that they don't have them.

I'm going with wait-and-see as well. I know Zachary Quinto is bad-ass, and Simon Pegg freaking rules in Shaun of the Dead, Karl Urban is good in a couple of things I've seen, and I'll just wait to see what the others can do. JJ Abrams seems to be able to pull great performances from little-known actors, so this just might work.

Of course. I'm curious what Abrams and company have in mind here. He says they are being careful about not breaking continuity, but also says this is a new vision of Trek. Some kind of alternate timeline? Time travel? Elderly Spock being in the film makes me think time travel is a distinct possiblity here; it could work if done right. I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

I would rather they get fat female black midget to play Kirk so long as they can act rather than someone who looks the part but cant.
If we have learnt anything from the Harry potter movies its that casting people who just look the part is a very bad idea.

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

The best attitude to adopt towards this film is to divorce yourself from everything you know about TOS and go in fresh as it will likely bear no similarity to anything we've seen given the "fresh face" comments from JJ Abrams. Unfortunately for me, Trek burned it's bridges along time ago so I won't be seeing this in theatres unless the trailers look really promising and I mean over and above what TWOK promised.

Well, judging by the fact that we are all here on this forum, I would guess that it will be very difficult to divorce ourselves from what we already know of the 'Trek universe. That's why a completely new set of characters would have been the most sensible choice for this film. Unfortunately, as was mentioned in other threads, Paramount and JJ opted for shallower, more widespread appeal over playing to the true core fandom of the 'Trek franchise.
And Teaos - who is probably the least concerned about TOS - was absolutely correct. I can overlook a mismatched image of a character far more easily than I could overlook terrible acting.

Some good points have been said here. This film, as has been said already, will make or break Trek. Personaly, I think its already dead and should just be left to rest in peace for a few decades.
I was feeling generous.I also find myself shocked that rochey hasn't used this topoc to start a fight yet!
