Seafort is right in both the traditional wet navy definition of a "cruiser," and in saying that those have little relevance in 'Trek. Part of the lack of anything called "battleship" or "battlecruiser" by Starfleet could very well be the UFP's obsessive avoidance of anything that sounds militaristic or threatening. Remember that passive aggression is Starfleet's stock-in-trade.

What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

When it comes to matters of military history and applications, you'll get no argument from me on that point.

The Miranda Class was comissioned a year before the Constitution Class (2243 to be exact).

According to the information of this site, there the Miranda is equipped with 2x Second Class Photon Torpedo Tubes, with only 40 rounds.

The Constitution has the same tubes, but has 120 torpedoes, so essentally the ships are matched 1v1 because they are firing them at the same rate and I doubt either ship could survive more than 40 photon torpedo hits.

I would imagine that in a combat situation, the Mirandas would act as friggates/cruisers for the larger Constitutions.

In a head to head battle, if they were just firing on each other at point-blank rance without moving, the Constitution would win. However, I think the Miranda may be able to out manuver the Constitutiion and win. It would be an interestiong match though.

Pure speculation from DITL - the class was first observed in the mid 2280s, and there's no evidence of it before then.

Also remember that both ships have full weapons coverage. There's really no where to go for the Miranda where it won't get hit. The only hope for a 1v1 victory in the Miranda's favor would be what Khan did. A suprise assult, however you'd have to follow through with the attack. Fire everything possible even to the point of draining out the phaser banks. Retreat for a recharge and run back in screaming. Best bet would be to try and attack the Connie's flanks. Out of the way of the PTLs.

StarTrek.com says that it was introduced prior to 2285, which means it was introduced before the mid 2280's.
StarTrek.com also says that the Constitution Class was comissioned in 2245.

So... was the Miranda Class was introduced before the Constitution Class? :)

@Deepcrush
Your right.
In a straight-up fight, the Miranda would be at a disadvantage in almost every aspect. I actually think the Constitution would cakewalk the Miranda unless they did somthing like you said.

Yes they can but at point blank range I'd rather make them work for their hit. Also at such close range maybe give the PTs a little trouble.

That's obvious, given that the Reliant was in service by that point, had been for several months at least, and presumably wasn't the first of the class. Nonetheless "before 2285" allows for an in-service date of 2284 just as much as 2244, and the fact that the Mirandas were still in service ninety years later, while the Connies were out of service around the turn of the century, strongly suggests that the Miranda was a much newer design.

Yeah. Any advantage in a fight, take it. But the torps can still find their mark even with a Miranda flank.

The point is to make it as hard as possible.

Yeah, hard, but still possible. Still, like we both agree on, any advantage is one worth using.
