Re: Why uber ships fail

Post by kostmayer »

Just what I was about to post - about the overwhelming force I mean. The Dominion new the exact make up of the Romulan Cardassian fleet. If they were that concerned about their own casualties, they could have attempted to just sabotage all the ships - but that would have increased the chances of discovery.

I wonder about the exact make up of the Dominion Fleet though. All I remember seeing on screen were Dominion bugs, but the way the Defiant was ploughing through them, I find it hard to believe that one Defiant class couldn't take on 7 or 8 bugs. I'm led to believe a Romulan Warbird is on a par with a Galaxy class - is the Defiant Class more powerful then a Galaxy?

I suppose the manouverability would come into play. If surrounded, a group of Defiants could probably punch through and escape - or turn around and attack. I'd assume the Warbirds are slower then the bugs, and would come underfire from all 8 ships at once.

The Defiant's advantage is that it has a very powerful weapon system for a ship of its size plus they are mostly faced forward. This means that the bulk of its power is going to be landed on the intended target. Against a standard GCS I think the Defiant would win. Vs a Uprated GCS I think the Defiant just wouldn't have the shields to with stand the amount of phaser fire she's going to take. The big difference will also be the PTLs vs QTLs.

The Warbird would not be able to avoid the bug's fire and may very well have a hard time bringing it's weapons to bear on the samller more manuverable targets. The Defiant would may be able to out manuver a few of the bugs but I think the Defiant might take to much damage to continue before it could destroy all 8 ships.

The D'D was built as a battleship and as such has weapon ports all over the place. Just like UFP ships, the D'D field of fire is impressive. I'd be shocked if they couldn't fire on an enemy at just about every angle of the ship. The ability to manuver would have been only of secondary concern.

Have we ever seen a Warbird fire from anywere accept the front of the ship? No. While it would be good design to have weapon covering the whole ship we have never seen this from a D'D.

...........well don't say that so readily, unless you have instant and imediate access to all shown stock footage of warbirds in action, thats hasty and could easily be to do with reporting a false/induced memory with a high rate of confidence especially since the memory strength is weak, and this postevent discussion will be a long time after you've seen such clips, that kind of statement said with such sureity is in the grounds of socio-cognitive psychologists like Loftus and Hoffman or Spanos.

Don't worry about it. M52 is just saying that the D'D only has one weapon array. Though on the bright side of things. The Romulan weapon design seems to allow them to fire in just about any direction they want from the array. Means that one gun thought of his will still give him some good cover. Because as we all know that battleships have only one gun. They'd better get their money worth out of it. :laughroll:

I'll correct you on this just once. I'm allowed to be as harsh as I want to anyone I want.

Back to the matter at hand... I don't think he ever insulted anyone. Just ignored anything they said that proved him wrong.

if only you were there to have been harsh to the creative team behind 'enterprise' pre-production/mid-production, would have done humanity a service

Then just give me one example of a D'D firing aft, port, or starboad and a will admit I'm wrong. I did say that you are likely correct because it would be stupid for the Romulans to design a ship without adiquate weapons coverage. That does not mean they weren't stupid.
