The old Star Trek comic book is what lead me down that path. Kirk WAS in command of Excelsior and even Spock has his own ship.......the Surak, I believe IIRC

Here's a clip from Wikipedia about it
Main article: Star Trek (DC Comics)
The first DC series picked up immediately after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, beginning in 1984 but after eight issues started to place stories after Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.[4] In these later issues, Kirk, after a multi-issue showdown with the Mirror Universe, is given command of the Excelsior, while Spock, mentally restored after mind-melding with his mirror self, is given the command of the USS Surak. However, with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home taking place right after III left off, the series quickly wiped the slate clean by having Kirk lose command of the Excelsior and Spock return to the state he was at the end of III. After the release of The Voyage Home, the series continued with Kirk commanding the Enterprise-A. These later issues also re-introduced the characters of Arex and M'Ress from Star Trek: The Animated Series. In 1988, the series ended when Paramount required all tie-in licenses to be renegotiated.

Which? :P

Sure the Excelsior's a decent design, and shows longevity but she can't match the achievements of the Connies.

The achievements of the Connie? What has the connie done that could match the Excelsior? It had a far shorter tour of duty then the Excelsior. No where near the upgrade ability of the Excelsior. Didn't even look as good as the Excelsior. Nothing that the Connie has done matches what the Excelsior has and still is doing.

Character shields don't work on the count of a class. Otherwise you Rochey would have to be in love with the GCS. :poke:

Worse off we'd have to like the akiraprise for stopping the deathstar!

There was ONE super connie that still didn't last as long as the Excelsior. There was ONE super GCS that is still not as reliable as the Excelsior. Pound for pound the Excelsior has out performed every other class around.

I never liked the ship myself. I did not like the lines and the neck looks clumsy. The nacelle struts look clumsy and the rear end is just...there. Granted, I think the sunken dish is cool, but that is all I can say about it.

I like the Ambassador class, and the Akira kicks ass. I am also a fan of the Sabre. But my all time love will always be the Constitution refit.
