Conrad is phenomenal - some of his short stories like "Typhoon" approach Heart of Darkness. As far as Crichton, try reading some older things - The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Congo, The Great Train Robbery, - before he began writing expressly for movie adaptation.

Anythin Tolkien (Westerniese was the best. *don't think I spelled it right, been many years.)
AVP novels (They weren't the greatest but still well worth it)
Dune (Frank Herbert is the league of Tolkien - Perfection)
Harry Turtledove (191 timeline series is pure joy, add 'guns of the south' as a kick off)
Warhammer 40k books are mostly good.
Horus Series is a great read minus Fulgrim.
Hamlet (Some of the greatest lines about mankind all together in one Epic Play!)
Oedipus
Antigone
Red Badge of Courage (The dream that founded the crap that was 'A Farewell to Arms')
The Toy Soldier
Starship Troopers (I'll kill you if you ever say the movie was anything but treason!)
The Hunt for the Red October
Of mice and men
Elie Wiesel's "Night"
Halo Series
Brian Hurberts Dune series (Not his father but he still has plenty of years to get there.)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Moby Dick (My mom read this to me as a bedtime story)
Glory and Honor (My dad read this to me as a bedtime story)
Animal Farm
Julius Caesar (Cry havoc! And let slip the dogs of war!)
Thats all I could think of for right now, I have more at home on my shelf that I can post later if I remember.

Re: Great novels
I've been so wanting to read Dragon Champion and its series, but have never been able to afford to buy it.

David Eddings:
The Belgaraid (5 book series)
The Mallorian (5 book series)
The Elenium (3 book series)
The Tamuli (3 book series)
Mercedez Lacky's Valdamar series
Terry Brooks Shannarra Books
Reymond E. Fiests Magician Series
Is anybody else seeing a pattern here?

The Black Jewels: Trilogy by Anne Bishop
Daughter of the Blood
Heir to the Shadows
Queen of the Darkness
It's dark fantasy, but the writing ability of Anne Bishop (at least in this series) is breathtaking. When I read Queen of the Darkness, I read it cover to cover without setting the book down.

Re: Great novels
Huh.
I'll have to check those out.
As far as fantasy stuff, I liked Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, though I got a little bogged down after book 8...
Best ever is Stephen King's Dark Tower series, IMO.

Re: Great novels
And now I can't remember if this was mentioned, but the Swords of Truth series looks to be quite good. I've only read Wizard's First Rule so far, but it was VERY good. And the villain was sooooo creepy AND was blonde haired/blue-eyed. (striking, since I SWEAR that 99.9% of all villains are portrayed as having dark hair and eyes)

Now that I think about it, it does seem that way.since I SWEAR that 99.9% of all villains are portrayed as having dark hair and eyes
No trees were killed in transmission of this message. However, some electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

One of my main villains bucks that trend completely, now that I think about it. I'll post info once I get my copyright on that short story.
