I've heard that softer surfaces are better, because they absorb more of the impact, making it easier on the joints.

Exactly. :)

When I was living on the beach in 2002, I actually ran for the first time in years (my giant beach umbrella was blowing down the beach after 50 mph winds picked it up. I caught it. 8) ).

Mikey - I'm sure we could rig up slings, if not working bows. The physics are pretty simple.

Me, being in Hawaii, would likely end up being mistaken for god, or in somebody's cookpot

Well I did food science in college so I could prob remember bout slaughter of animals and cuttin em up. I used to be a bit of an outdoors kid, big into my fishing and stuff and read books bout survival and spent a summer or two building forts in a nearby wood so shelter building I could help with. Even tried fire building without matches etc (I gave up cause I got bored with it though I'd imagine a survival issue would focus my mind).
Whatever outdoor knowledge I do have would be related to my part of the world so prob be kinda lost on plants in the USA, anyone know what tobacco leaves look like?
Also the science background included fermentation and distillation
But I can't throw, I throw like a geek!

I can cook, I can sew pretty well, I can (surprisingly) wield a blade fairly well if necessary (trial run at a taster, dont ask). I can also be fairly diplomatic, and pick up languages quite well.

Oh, yeah - I can make beer, and if I try really hard I might remember how to make hard liquor from the times I used to help dudes make it in their dorms.

I also have some knowledge on how to make alcohol from various things, including potatoes.

So while we probably won't survive the first winter, we can at least get completely pissed beforehand.

BTW, is it true that you're supposed to set puithuin (sp.?) alight before drinking it? I've heard that if it burns blue, it's OK to extinguish and drink it; but if it burns orange, it'll probably do some systemic damage. Basically, that it sort of ferments itself into isopropyl after enough time.
