I'd already resolved never to see another TNG movie after Nemesis. And I suspect many people feel the same way after it bombed so bad. The original cast angle attracts the "geek" crowd while the reboot will attract the wider crowd.

I think part of the problem is that the core fan base is no longer big enough to ensure financial success.

But don't you think that core fan base is large enough (and dedicated enough) to ensure financial viability? Now, if you include licensing, software and media sales, etc., I think Paramount could still be in the black without clobbering the franchise like they probably will.

Unfortunately, it appears that they will **** the franchise - and the hardcore fans - in order to make a few extra bucks.

If it's a chaoice between financial viability and wider financial success, they'll take the wider success. We saw that with nBSG where they turned down the Richard Hatch project with much of the original cast in favour of RDM's project.

Eric Bana Cast as Villain "Nero"

Australian actor Eric Bana, best known for his role in "Munich," will be playing a new villain called "Nero" in the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek" movie, according to inside sources. Little else is known about this character, but based on Bana's past performances the Aussie hunk will make a fine antagonist.

Production is slated to begin next month at Paramount, with a release date of Christmas Day 2008.

Korean-born actor John Cho of "Harold & Kumar" fame has been cast as Sulu in the new "Star Trek" feature, playing a role immortalized by Japanese-American actor George Takei.

Additionally, Briton Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead") has boarded the Paramount project as Scotty, the ship's Scottish chief engineer.

ok, i'm starting to think that star trek xi is just one big elaborate joke...

I don't think actors would really say no to a star trek role, because people are likely to remember them as such for the rest fo their career andit just looks nice on your CV.
