I had no idea they were spending $150 million on this movie! That's what the EW article says anyway. Anyone who's seen Evan Almighty or Titanic knows that lots of money does not a good movie make. But still, maybe this means they won't use the same 3 models for all the FX shots.

Hey, at least we might get some good space battles out of it.

Of course, Nemesis had battles too, and it didn't make that a good film.

It had shiny but dumb battles. Hopefully, we'll get shiny and intelligent battles.

Here's hoping. The couple of pics of the Kelvin make it look like it'll be shiny enough.

I have an inkling that this movie is going for mainstream appeal in the action/sci-fi genre; there could be little realism involved if that's true. Just a hunch, and I hope I'm wrong. It really is surreal seeing that photo of the new cast. Like a bad dream where the people you know are suddenly strangers...

I felt the exact same sensation. It was almost disbelief. And to think for some this goes back over four decades. It just seems wrong. I think this is a bad idea? Why not make a 24th century series? The whole re-casting thing just seems like an idea that never should have gotten past the drawing board.

...should never have gotten past the drawing board IF it were made to appeal to Trekkies. The mainstream, who might go see it simply as a cool sci-fi film, don't care.

The thing is, I don't know if those non-Trek audience members would see it anyway.

Indeed. Trek isn't known for being mainstream. At best, it might entice other sci-fi fans to see it, but I doubt it. They're trying to sell a product to a non-existant audience, and alienating the audience they already have.

This is what I've been saying from the begining on STXI. Realistically will Joe the Plumber go to see this movie? I seriously doubt it. At this point if your not a fan recasting it won't do much. Some might check it out but honesty, if this is the price of continuing Trek, I'll gladly break out the Rum and Drink a round to its demise because that would be a lot more enjoyable to me than seeing it twisted to be something it never really was.

Everything I hear about this film makes me more and more upset... or at least disappointed.

I honestly;y support the idea of putting Trek on the back burner for a while. The in a few years, bring in a new crew, if possible lead by someone like Manny Coto (who should have been given this movie, anyone know why he wasn't?) set in the post DW era, early 25th Century. I think that would do more to invigorate the franchise than one movie that risks alienating all of your fans.
