I'm not sure. There was already a template for augmented humans, and they were definitely deeper. In there defense though, Khan and his crew were the real deal. The WERE the tyrants of the Eugenics Wars. The Augments were hatched by Soong, raised on a planet, captured a ship, and had a go. They were sorely lacking practical experience.
