By all means, read Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (of five books) ASAP. I also recommend the BBC radio scripts.

The film's pretty good as well - Adams was an advisor for it, and it meshes well with the "same but different" feel of the other incarnations.

Yep - he's credited for the screenplay, as he was involved in the early stages of production, and wrote the first draft himself not long before he died.

Gotta say, I wasn't too thrilled with the film. It was cool, but I'd rather read the books.
