Whenever anyone asks me "why do you bother learning off numbers and information and go onto forums to talk about stuff like that?", I always respond with "why do you bother memorising sports statistics and go onto forums to talk about stuff like that?"
Something simple like that is usualy good at getting people to realise it's no different than the stuff they do.

I once heard a comedy skit about people who dresses up as their favourite characters and remembers every fact from every time they where on TV, in the end it turned out they where talking about football, I wish I could find it now, it was so good.
