Re: Crew Shifts
But we see Riker on the bridge along with Picard most of the time, so it's doubtfull he commands a seperate shift. And why "theta shift"? Why not go alphabeticaly? It should be Gamma Shift. Your right Gamma. Yes we see Riker, but most of the time it is because there was something going on...

Re: Crew Shifts
But 90% of everything seems to happen on the "Alpha" shift.....unless the staff gets called to the bridge Most likely what happens. I don't remember were I read it but it was suggested that normally the Captain would be the leading officer on the bridge on Alpha shift, the 1st officer on ...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
The same principle can indeed be applied to dialogue. Yes it can. Everything in the universe should be viewed as "possibly flawed." The position you seem to be taking is that because some visuals have been flawed, they all are flawed. That's little different then saying, "I know a Je...

Re: Crew Shifts
I've never had a problem with us seeing all the senior officers on the bridge at one time because most of the time it is when something important is happening.

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
Herein lies the crux of the disagreement. I'd say that this statement is incorrect, and that more accurate would be to say that "there is a chance that it is flawed." To say "a good chance" would be, as I've pointed out, an unfounded extrapolation. Following from this, the rejec...

Re: Possible Roles For Fighters
I'd guess that impulse "speeds" in fact represent acceleration, but it begs the question of why even scientifically-minded people (like Spock and Data, who are both also notorious nitpickers) still refer to "speed." That could be. Until I heard that most people believed that max...

Re: Possible Roles For Fighters
There are quite a few problems with the impulse speeds of ships. One we never really see ships move as fast as they are stated to move. If they were/could mover at speed even a quarter for light speed I don't see ship combat playing out the way it does. There would be far to little time to react. En...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
Again, "I reject the available evidence by saying that there is no answer." I reject the available evidence because there is a good chance that it is flawed. If it is the only evidence we can't know if it is flawed or not. No there isn't. There is good reason to be skeptical of some visua...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
I don't have a problem with that bit but what I'm getting at here is that all that's happening is we're swapping a set of problems for the same set. All the visuals problems exist in dialogue as well, except they are harder to explain because when a character makes an obvious mistake and no one cor...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
Visuals have errors, yes. However the dialogue method requires us to believe that the characters are virtually infallible, do we have to trot out the example of Troi not knowing what a hydrogen atom was, Data mixing up units etc? We can at least explain away some of the VFX inconsistencies as an of...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
I do not, however, use it as part of my analysis - merely to define the source material. It should also be used to measure the quality of that material. Unless there is strong evidence to the contrary, yes. Wow, let me show this Bigfoot footage I have. We treat visuals as accurate unless there is s...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
So what does a GCS look like? Or a phaser pistol? Or planets? By this logic, I could correctly argue that the E-D was 482 miles long and pink with purple polka-dots; that Captain Picard had a full, luxurious head of wavy brown hair; or that the Borg resembled, in fact, 4-foot long furry rodents. Th...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
You're opening a family-sized can of worms here. This statement basically opens the door for "I reject everything I disagree with." That idea, of course, leads to the result that nobody can discuss anything... at all. Not at all. No if someone tries to say that a Galor can beat a GCS or t...

Re: Trek Space Combat Ranges
And? Yet again you're mixing IU and OOU analysis. You asked about canon, which is an out of universe idea. The sole reason you keep whittering on about the visuals being "suspect" is because you mix IU and OOU analysis. Stick to IU analysis and the supposed problem dissapears. So any piec...
