I get the feeling I ought to like this episode, only I don't. The reason is probably that the story doesn't make sense. The 'redirected transport' thing has happened several times, so I'll let them have that, but I'm not sure about anything afterwards. Firstly, it seems far too easy for the captain and the doctor to escape and then walk to the border, especially when they are supposed to be in 'The Capital'. Secondly, the Kes and the Prit (who are obviously supposed to be the same people, just different nationalities) were far too paranoid to be believable. It seemed like a caricature of something, but I'm not sure what. They also missed a trick with the planet's name: 'Kes-prit' or 'Prit-kes'. Still, I did like the idea of the telepathic link. It helped bring a lot of things to the fore, and had to be artificial to do so. I'm not sure if Picard was lying to himself when he said he had lost his feelings for Beverley, but it seems so judging by the ending. That's the only way the ending can make sense. It would have been interesting to recycle the link idea with two people who really dislike each other to compare with this. |
