Jean-Luc Picard [1] |
Picard's time at the academy was somewhat difficult. He would later think of himself as being undisciplined and not fully committed to his studies. [2] He failed a semester of Organic Chemistry because of the distractions provided by "A.F.", a friend of his. [3] His friendship with Boothby helped him to focus his efforts. [4]
Graduating in 2327, Picard was on Starbase Earhart awaiting his first posting when he became involved in a fight with some Nausicaans. He was stabbed through the heart and had to undergo emergency surgery to have an artificial unit installed. [2]
In 2333 Picard was serving aboard the USS Stargazer when the Captain was killed, prompting Picard to take control of the ship. His actions led to a promotion to captain of the Stargazer. [2] Picard would later comment that although the Enterprise-D was far superior in every way, there were times when he would give anything to command the Stargazer again. [5]
Picard's time aboard the Stargazer included a stint on the Cardassian border during the war with the Federation. At one point he was sent to make peace overtures to a Cardassian vessel. Picard lowered his shields as a sign of good faith, prompting the Cardassian ship to attack. Although damaged, the Stargazer managed to escape. [6]
In 2355 the Stargazer encountered an unknown vessel in the Maxia Zeta system. The vessel attacked, badly damaging the Stargazer. Picard invented the "Picard Manoeuvre" on the spot, using a burst at warp speed to confuse the enemy and then firing all weapons at point blank range. Although he was successful, the Stargazer was abandoned and believed destroyed. [7] Picard's actions were the subject of a court martial in which prosecutor Phillipa Louvois attempted to convict him of negligence. Picard always felt that Louvois had gone beyond simply seeking the truth about the incident and instead pushed for conviction at any cost, something she vehemently denied. He maintained a dislike for her for more than a decade afterwards as a result. [8]
In 2364 Picard was assigned to command the NCC-1701-D USS Enterprise, the new Galaxy class ship. His first mission was to investigate the mysterious Farpoint base which had been constructed on Deneb IV. En route the ship encountered the Q for the first time when a member of the continuum threatened to deny Humanity any further space travel. Fortunately Picard was able to resolve the matter. [1]
Only a few months after taking command of the Enterprise Picard was offered a promotion to Admiral and the post of commandant of Starfleet Academy. He declined the offer. [9]
In 2365 Picard made first contact with the Borg after Q flung the Enterprise into Borg space. Unable to escape, Picard begged Q to return the ship but worried that the Borg would eventually reach Federation space [10] This fear proved well founded and in the following year a Borg vessel did indeed launch the first major attack against the Federation. Picard was abducted and assimilated by the Borg, apparently intended as a sort of official spokesperson dubbed Locutus. [11] As Locutus Picard assisted the Borg in winning the Battle of Wolf 359, a disaster in which 39 Starfleet ships were lost. [12] Some brilliant improvisational tactics by Commander Riker enabled the Enterprise crew to recapture Picard and eventually to use him to infiltrate the Borg command systems and destroy the Cube. [13] Although apparently recovered, his experiences with the Borg would haunt him for months [14] and even years afterward. [15] At lest some of the officers who served at Wolf 359 blamed Picard for the defeat, in spite of his unwilling participation on the Borg side. For many years Ben Sisko, who served as first officer on board the USS Saratoga during the battle, blamed Picard for the loss of his wife. [16]
In 2371 the Enterprise-D responded to a Romulan attack on the Amargosa observatory. Picard uncovered a plot by Dr Tolian Soren to destroy two star systems as part of his efforts to reach the Nexus, a spatial anomaly which was a gateway to a trans-dimensional realm. Within the Nexus Picard discovered James Kirk, who had been absorbed into the anomaly when the Enterprise-B had attempted to rescue some El-Aurian ships trapped in it in 2293. Picard enlisted Kirk's help to defeat Soren, but Kirk was killed in the effort. Picard buried Starfleet's most famous officer in a simple stone cairn on a mountaintop on Veridian III. Unfortunately the Enterprise-D was also lost during this mission when a Klingon vessel commanded by renegades Lursa and B'Etor managed to find a way to penetrate the ship's shields. [17]
In 2372 Picard and his senior officers transferred to the Enterprise-E, a Sovereign class starship newly built. They conducted a year-long shakedown cruise of the ship, which was at the time the most advanced in Starfleet. When the Borg launched another invasion of the Federation in 2373, Starfleet felt that Picard's experiences as a victim of assimilation made him unsuitable to join the fight, but he disobeyed orders to intercept the Borg Cube at Earth and was instrumental in defeating it. He also managed to defeat an attempt to alter Earth's history by preventing first contact between Humanity and the Vulcans in 2063. [15]
Although Picard was a strong supporter of Starfleet, he was willing to violate Starfleet regulations when he felt it was appropriate. [18] He amassed no less than nine violations of the Prime Directive by 2367 [12], including rescuing Sarjenka's planet from destruction [19] and attempting to correct an accidental case of cultural contamination by bringing a Mintakan aboard the Enterprise and explaining the true nature of Starfleet. [20] In 2365 he refused to allow Commander Maddox to experiment on Lieutenant Commander Data's positronic brain, fighting a court case which established for the first time that androids have rights within the Federation. [8] In 2366 he disobeyed a direct order from Admiral Haftel to turn the android Lal over for experimentation on the same grounds. [21]
Picard's most notorious violation of orders came in 2375 when he actively fought against the joint Federation/Son's mission to remove the Ba'ku from their planet so that the healing properties of the planet's metaphasic radiation could be harnessed fully. Picard sent the Enterprise-E to reveal the conspiracy to the public whilst he battled the Son'a on the planet. [22]
In 2379 Picard took the Enterprise-E to Romulus on the orders of Admiral Janeway, seeking to establish relations with the new government after the coup which was staged by Shinzon. Shinzon proved to be a clone of Picard created by a former Romulan government; they intended to use the clone to replace Picard with a spy of their own. When the government changed the plan was abandoned, and Shinzon was sent to Remus to die. Instead he prospered, becoming a highly successful leader during the Dominion war. Shinzon used a Thalaron weapon to eradicate the Romulan senate and had planned to do the same to Earth; he needed Picard in order to repair faults in his own genetic makeup. In a pitched battle between the Enterprise-E, and Shinzon's flagship the Scimitar, Picard was eventually able to board the enemy ship and kill Shinzon. Picard's life was saved by Data, who transported him back to the Enterprise before firing on the Thalaron weapon, sacrificing himself to destroy the Scimitar. [23]
In 2380 the Borg began sending cubes into the Alpha Quadrant to attack the Federation and other powers. Picard, realising that the Borg intended to finally bring their full might to bear on the Quadrant with the intention of obliterating all of the major powers there, became increasingly withdrawn and depressed, coming to regard the situation as hopeless. [24]
Locating the Azure Nebula as the source of the Borg incursion, the Enterprise-E and the USS Aventine explored a series of subspace tunnels which the Borg were using to arrive in Federation space. Picard wanted to destroy the tunnels, though many of his officers and Captain Dax of the Aventine disagreed, and were subsequently proved right when aalysis of the tunnels showed that their collapse could cause catastrophic consequences. The major powers all sent large fleets to attempt to blockade the nebula instead. Whilst investigating the tunnels the Enterprise-E and Aventine missed the arrival of a massive Borg armada which destroyed the fleet and began the process of annihilating the Quadrant. [25]
The disaster sent Picard deeper into depression, and he began to believe that resistance to the Borg was indeed futile. He began to oppose the efforts of the USS Aventine and USS Titan to fight the Borg, considering their plans too dangerous. He was also dubious of the attempts to involve the Caeliar in the fight, instead ordering LaForge to start construction of Thalaron weaponry to fight the Borg - an order which LaForge flatly refused to obey under any circumstances. This action and conversation with Captain Riker convinced Picard that he needed to re-asses his approach, and together the three crews were able to convince the Caeliar to intervene and destroy the Borg for good. This finally freed Picard completely of the residual effects of his abduction, a very emotional moment for him. [26]
By 2385 Picard had been promoted to Admiral. He was heavily involved in the Federation mission to relocate the Romulans when their planet was threatened by a supernova. When Mars was attacked by synthetic lifeforms the Federation withdrew its support for the Romulan rescue mission. Picard tried a last ditch attempt to get Starfleet to continue by threatening to resign. Unfortunately, the plan backfired when Starfleet accepted his resignation. [27] At which point he retired to his vineyard in France where he ran the family wine business. [28]
In 2399 Picard was approached by a young woman, Dahj, who had seen him on a news broadcast and felt a deep connection to him. She had seen a vision of him after she was attacked by assassins in her flat. She had somehow managed to fight off and kill the assassins despite having no training in self defence. Picard discovered a painting of a young woman identical to Dahj, which was painted by Data before his death. Picard surmised that Dahj was an andoid with some connection to Data. Before he could prove this she was attacked and killed by more assassins. In order to make sense of the events Picard visited the Daystrom Institute in Okinowa, Japan, in search of Bruce Maddox. There he met Doctor Agnes Jurati a colleague of Maddox. He told her of his suspicions and asked if such a thing was possible. She told him that Bruce was working on that principal before his disappearance and that his work would have resulted in a pair of twinned androids. On discovering this Picard decided to mount a mission to find and save the second android. [28]
In order to mount his rescue mission Picard approached the Startfleet Commander in Chief to obtain a ship. He was, however, turned down. Picard decided to go anyway and contacted an old friend and colleague Raffaela Musiker in order to obtain a ship prepared to take on his mission. [29] Raffi was not pleased to see Picard at first but eventually agreed to help, putting him in touch with Cristobal Rios, an ex-Starfleet officer who now owned his own cargo vessel. [30] Raffi had tracked Maddox to a planet called Freecloud and Picard, Agnes and Raffi all set out to locate him. This marked the first time Picard had left Earth since his reitrement, almost 14 years previously. [30] Prior to visiting Freecloud Picard paid another visit to Vashti in order to enlist the help of a Qowat Milat to help on the mission. The sisters turned him down but Elnor, then a grown man, agreed to assist him. Whilst on Vashti Picard was attacked by former Senator Tenqem Adrev and a group of others from the Romulan Rebirth movement. It was only due to intervention from Elnor that Picard survived. With Elnor joining the group they proceeded to Freecloud where they rescued Maddox using a very contrived plan. Maddox, however, died soon after. Although it was not known at the time he was killed by Agnes, but not before he revealed that the second android, called Soji, was currently on The Artifact. [27]
Assisted by Raffi, Picard obtained permission to visit The Artifact. When he arrived he was quite disturbed to be back on board a Borg Cube once again. It brought back horrible memories and left him upset and confused, to the point at which he nearly fell from a high walkway and was only saved by ex-Borg who were in the area. He went on to meet with Hugh a former Borg that he met when the USS Enterprise discovered a crashed Borg vessel. Hugh gave him a tour of the Borg reclamation facilities that he was in charge off. These helped free former Borg, removing many of their implants and providing them with as normal a life as possible. Picard was very impressed with the breadth and scale of the work. He told Hugh of the real reason for his visit and Hugh assisted him in finding Soji. When the Romulans attempted to kill Soji, Hugh assisted Picard in rescuing her and transported them both to the distant planet, Nepenthe, using assimilated Trajector technology located on the Cube. [31]
Picard had chosen the planet Nepenthe because it was home to his old friends and colleagues Will Riker and Deanna Troi together with their daughter Kestra. There he explained to Soji what had happened to her sister and what he believed her history to be. Deanna attempted to help her to come to terms with the revelations, but it was Kestra that provided a novel teenage perspective that made her realise that it wasn't all bad news to discover that she was an android. [32] Once Picard's ship arrived at the planet they were able to continue on their journey. With the help of some recovered memories Soji was able to guide them to the planet where she was constructed. Enroute Picard contacted Starfleet CIC and updated her with the information they had discovered. Picard insisted she provide a fleet to defend the android homeworld, to which she agreed. [33]
Although they were initially greated warmly by the androids on the planet they eventually felt threatened by the imminent Romulan attack and confined Picard to his room so he could not interfere with their plans to contact the higher androids. Agnes remained free by promising to help them in their goal. [34] Agnes freed Picard and together they held off the whole Romulan fleet with their single cargo vessel and a gadget that allowed them to present fake duplicates of their ship. After their ruse was discovered the Federation fleet arrived to take over the defence. It was after he had convinced Soji that she didn't need to summon the higher androids to protect her people that Picard finially succumbed to his brain anomaly, causing him to die shortly after beaming to the planet's surface. [35]
Following his death Altan Soong, Agnes and Soji were able to transfer Picard's consciousness to a massively complex quantum simulation that had been built to house Data's consciousness. There he was able to talk with Data and thank him for his sacrifice. [35]
Soon after he was transferred to the body of a Golem, an android form which allowed him to continue to live his life. The Golem had been programmed to have much the same life expectancy as Picard had he not had the brain anomaly. Picard followed Data's wish for the simulation he was contained in to be terminated. Following the revelations from Picard's mission the Federation ban on synthetic life was lifted, allowing Picard and Soji to explore the universe together with the rest of the crew of La Sirena. [35]
Following the events on Coppelius, Picard rejoined Starfleet as an Admiral and became Chancellor of Starfleet academy. [36]
In 2401, he was called to the USS Stargazer when a message from the Borg claimed that they wished to join the Federation, specifically requesting he lead the negotions. When the Borg queen beamed onto the bridge of the Stargazer and attempted to assimilate the ship, Picard ordered the vessel be destroyed, using the ships self destruct system. At the moment of the ships detonation Picard found himself back at his chateau, but it was not as he remembered it. Q then appeared and told him that his trial had never ended. [36] Q revealed that, in this timeline, he was the vicious General Picard and responsible for the enslavement of the Romulans and eradication of the Cardassians, Klingons and many other species. [37]
Abandoned by Q, he searched and was able to connect with Seven of Nine, Raffi, Elnor and Rios who had all been brought over along with Picard. Together they were able to discover, with the help of the Borg Queen, that this reality was caused by a change made in the past by Q. The Queen claimed to be able to assist them in locating that point in time that the change occured and help them time travel to the required period. Implementing the plan Elnor is mortally wounded, however the team is able to reach the desired time period, crash landing at Picard's chateau, which is abandoned at this point in time. [37] Soon after arrival, Elnor dies from his injuries. [38]
Told by the Borg Queen that they need to find "The Watcher", [38] Picard beams to Los Angeles in order to contact Guinan, who has yet to meet him by this time, but who he hopes will have the information he needs. She hasn't heard that term but knows of a "Supervisor" who acts as a "Guardian Angel" for someone on Earth and she puts him in contact. The "Superviser" turns out to be called Tallinn and looks exactly like laris. [39] Tallinn explains that she is watching over one of Picard's ancestors, Renée Picard, who is important to Human history. When looking at Renée's therapy session, Jean-Luc immediately recognises her therapist as Q, he explains to Tallinn that Q is using Renée to change history. Picard knows that Renée is destined to find a microrganism on Jupiter's moon Io and it is essential to the future of humanity. This makes it vital that she goes on the mission. The team, including Tellinn, plan to attend the pre-flight gala so they can keep an eye on Renée. [40]
Once at the gala Jean-Luc is spotted by Adam Soong, who reports him to security. He manages to evade them long enough to talk to Renée and reassure her that she will do a good job, despite her misgivings. When Soong sees this he attempts to run Renée down in his car, Jean-Luc pushes her out of the was and is hit instead, ending up in a coma. The team take him to Teresa's clinic and Tallinn uses a device to enter his mind, hoping to help him to wake up. [41]
Inside his mind Tallinn relives memories from his childhood where his father is abusive to his mother. Eventually, they piece together memories that show that his mother suffered from mental illness, with periods of darkness. His father, it turned out, was only attempting to protect his mother and Jean-Luc from coming to any harm. Picard wakes from his coma. [42]
Picard returns to Guinan and asks her to attempt to summon Q, which she does, however, they are instead taken into custardy by an FBI agent. [42] Agent Wells is convinced that Picard and Guinan are aliens, which Picard categorically denies. With help from Guinan, Picard discovers that Agent Wells is driven by an encounter he had as a teenager. He had witnessed Vulcan's on Earth and they had attempted a mind meld to erase his memory. Picard is able to explain this to him and he and Guinan are released. [43]
Picard and the team return to the chateau, but are attacked by the Borg Queen, who has taken over Agnes, and a squad of mercenarys, provided by Adam Soong and turned into Borg drones. A battle ensues and eventully the team is able to kill the drones and make peace with the Borg Queen, who is convinced by Agnes to change their method of working away from assimilation to cooperation. During the battle Picard remembers one final thing from his past. As a young child he had released his mother from a room his father had locked her in and she had hung herself in the conservatory. The Queen leaves them with a parting message, in order to succedd there must be two Renées, the one who dies and the one who lives. [44]
Tallinn believes that this means that she must impersonate Renée and allow Adam to kill her. Picard disagrees but she goes ahead with the plan anyway. Dying in Picard's arms afterwards. Picard meets with Q and they discuss the puropse of the trial. Q hopes that he has learned to accept love. [45]
Q returns them to their own timeline and they prevent the detonation of the Stargazer. Picard allows the Queen to take over the ship and she reveals that she is Agnes Jurati, she has come to prevent a disaster that would destroy a Federation planet. Picard assists her and they succeed. He grants the Borg provisional membership in the Federation. Picard and the team go to Guinan's bar on Earth to celebrate their return and the restoration of the timeline. After a few toasts Picard says there is somewhere he has to be. He returns home just in time to find Laris with her bags packed and about to leave. He talks to her and asks for a second chance for them to be together. Laris agrees. [45] |
William T. Riker [1] |
Commander William Riker is a slightly unconventional character. He has a somewhat relaxed command style, and often indulges in humour with both senior and subordinate officers. [46] He prefers to lead by example rather than simply sit back and order others forward; off duty he is happy to socialise with subordinates, and has acquired something of a reputation as a "party animal" among the crew of the Enterprise-D. [18] Some have mistaken this style for a lack of professionalism, [46] but when it comes to getting results Riker has been described by Captain Picard as one of the best officers in the fleet. [47]
Riker graduated 8th in his class at Starfleet Academy and was considered a high flyer. [47] However, he turned down captaincy of the USS Drake in order to serve on the Enterprise. [48] He rapidly began to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with; in 2364 one of his greatest personal tests came when he was offered near-unlimited personal power by Q. Riker initially refused to accept these abilities, but soon gave into the temptation. Despite this, he quickly saw the error of his ways and relinquished his powers. [49]
In 2365 Riker became the first Federation officer to serve on board a Klingon vessel when he became First Officer of the Pagh under an officer exchange programme. Riker served with distinction during his brief time on the Pagh, managing to simultaneously uphold his Starfleet loyalties and his oath to serve the Pagh even when hostilities threatened to erupt between the two. [50]
In 2365 Riker was again offered his own command, this time the USS Aries. He refused again, preferring to continue aboard the Enterprise. [51] When offered the USS Melbourne in 2366, Riker once more refused to accept his own command. Some took this to be a sign that he was unwilling to take the responsibility of a captaincy, but Riker showed this to be demonstratably false when he was forced to take command of the Enterprise after Captain Picard was captured by the Borg. Riker personally devised the plan which succeeded in recovering the Captain from the Borg vessel, ultimately allowing them to be destroyed in Earth orbit. Once Picard was restored to health Riker refused to consider remaining a ships captain, instead returning to his post as First Officer of the Enterprise-D. [13]
In 2371 Riker was in temporary command of the Enterprise-D when it was attacked by a Klingon Bird of Prey. The warship had found a way to penetrate the shields of the Galaxy class ship; despite this colossal disadvantage Riker was able to defeat the Klingons, although the engineering hull of the Enterprise took fatal damage in doing so. [15]
After Captain Picard was assigned as Captain of the Enterprise-E, Riker accepted the post of First Officer. Perhaps one of his most notable achievements came when that ship went back in time to 2063 to prevent the Borg from stopping the first warp flight by Humans. Cut off from the Enterprise, Riker commanded the effort to repair and launch the Phoenix and was actually a member of the crew alongside Zefram Cochrane himself! [52]
Riker continued in the first officer position on the Enterprise-E until 2378, when he accepted command of the USS Titan. He married Commander Deanna Troi shortly before going to the Titan, where his first mission was to re-establish relations with the new Romulan government after the temporary rise to power of Shinzon. [23] Riker's service number is SC 231-427. [47]
Riker and Troi had two children, Thaddeus and Kestra. Thaddeus, known as Thad, was named after Thaddius Riker, a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was a distant ancestor of Will. Kestra was named after Deanna's sister, who tragically drowned at the age of seven. [32]
When Thad was infected with Mendaxic Neurosclerosis, a silicon virus, doctors said that the only cure was to culture the affected cells in an active positronic matrix. The problem was that the Federation ban on synthetic life meant that there were no active positronic matrices in existence any more. In a last ditch attempt to help him, Riker and his family moved to the planet Nepanthe, which was known for its regenerative properties. Thad came to think of the planet as his own homeworld. Ultimately the plan was unsuccessful and Thad passed away. Riker and his family remained on the planet after his passing. [32]
Will Riker lead the fleet that arrived at Coppelius to protect the androids that lived there. [35] |
Deanna Troi [1] |
Half Human and Half Betazoid, Deanna Troi is empathic rather than telepathic. [1] She has served in Starfleet for twenty years, attaining the rank of Commander. [53] Troi is one of the foremost experts on the psychology of long duration starship missions in Starfleet, and her expertise was recognised when she was posted to the Federation flagship in 2364 [1]. She served with distinction in the role of Counselor, but initially had little to to do with the ship's operational aspects. In 2368 the Enterprise suffered a serious accident when it struck a quantum filament, and Troi was forced to take command of the damaged ship. Although she handled the situation successfully [54], the experience made her question her limited knowledge of operational matters. In 2370 Troi decided to expand her role on board the ship by taking the Commander's test in 2370. Although she found the technical areas difficult to master, she was eventually successful and was duly promoted to Commander. [53]
During the battle in which the Enterprise-D was lost, Troi replaced an injured crewman at the helm station; she subsequently undocked the ship's saucer section when the warp core began to overload. The explosion knocked the main helm controls offline and threw the saucer section into Viridian III's atmosphere. Troi and Lieutenant Commander Data managed to control the re-entry and landing sufficiently minimise casualties. [15]
Like most of the crew of the Enterprise, Troi was subsequently posted to the new Enterprise-E. During that ships mission into the past to ensure the success of Zefram Cochrane's warp flight, Troi headed the ground control crew of the Phoenix. [52] She continued as ship's Counselor on the Enterprise-E for six years before accepting a position on board the USS Titan, alongside her new husband Commander Will Riker, who was assigned to the captaincy of the ship. Shortly before the transfer Troi visited Romulus with the Enterprise-E, where she attracted the unwelcome telepathic attentions of the new Praetor, Shinzon. Troi was able to turn the tables on Shinzon during his battle with the Enterprise-E, using the telepathic link to locate his cloaked ship for the Enterprise to target. She also took the helm of the Enterprise for its ramming of the Scimitar. [23]
After her wedding Troi continued to serve aboard the Titan with her husband.
Riker and Troi had two children, Thaddeus and Kestra. Thaddeus, known as Thad, was named after Thaddius Riker, a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War, a distant ancestor of Will.
In a last ditch attempt to help him, Troi and her family moved to the planet Nepanthe, which was known for its regenerative properties. Thad came to think of the planet as his own homeworld. Ultimately the plan was unsuccessful and Thad passed away. Deanna and her family remained on the planet after his passing. [32] |
Natasha Yar [1] |
Natasha Yar was born on the failed colony world of Turkana IV. [55] Her childhood was typical of that world; she spent her life scavenging for food for the family, attempting to avoid the rape gangs which roamed the colony. Her parents where killed when she was five, and Tasha was subsequently raised by her sister. She refused to accept the conditions in which she found herself, and at the age of fifteen she managed to convince a passing trader to take her away from the colony. [56] She ended up on a Federation planet, where she was assigned refugee status; after two years she joined Starfleet Academy, graduating in 2359.
Yar performed exceptionally both in the Academy and on active duty. By 2364 she had been assigned as Chief Tactical Officer of the Enterprise-D [1] at the request of Captain Picard, who had been impressed when he saw her negotiating a minefield to save the lives of some trapped personnel. [56] An expert at many types of fighting, Yar was favoured in the ship's pool during martial arts competitions. [57] She secured a vital vaccine for the Federation by defeating Yareena, wife of Ligonian leader Lutan, in single combat. [58] Yar made several good friends on board the ship, including Geordi La Forge. Whilst under the influence of a form of the Psi-2000 virus she even became intimate with Data, much to her subsequent embarrasment! [55] She also expressed some romantic interest in Captain Picard, though his role as Captain precluded any involvement. [49] While on an away mission to rescue the crew of a shuttle crashed on Vagra II, Enterprise crewmen encountered an entity which called itself Armus. Armus, who claimed to be an embodiment of pure evil, prevented the away team from reaching the shuttle. When Yar tried to walk around Armus he killed her with an energy discharge.
Natasha left a message for her shipmates in which she thanked them for being a part of her life and told them how much she had enjoyed being a part of the Enterprise crew. [57]
In 2367 a Romulan operative, Sela, claimed to be Tasha Yar's daughter - an absurd claim on the face of it as Sela was approximately the same age that Yar would have been had she lived. Guinan told Captain Picard that an temporal anomaly involving the Enterprise-C had led to a Tasha Yar from an alternate timeline being captured by the Romulans some decades in the past; this Yar had agreed to become the consort of a Romulan in return for the lives of the rest of the Enterprise-C's crew. Yar was killed some years later whilst trying to escape with her daughter. [59] |
Beverly Crusher [1] |
Commander Beverly Crusher is one of the more typical Enterprise crew members. Born in 2324 [60], she was drawn to medicine at an early age by her grandmother, who was not a trained doctor but was skilled in the use of herbs and roots to care for the sick. Beverly learned some of her grandmothers skill when she assisted during the Arvada III tragedy. [48] She joined Starfleet Academy medical school at the age of 18 and spent eight years there, [60] marrying Jack Crusher after being introduced by their mutual friend Walker Keel. [61] Jack proposed to Beverly by sending her a book entitled "How to Advance Your Career Through Marriage" [14]; the two had a child approximately one year after they married, during Beverly's last year of the Academy. [62] She did her internship on the planet Delos IV under the tutelage of Doctor Dalen Quaice in 2352. [63]
Beverly spent a good deal of time with her husband's Captain and friend, Jean-Luc Picard, little knowing that he had fallen in love with her. Picard decided not to act on his feelings even after Jack died, feeling that it would be a betrayal of his friend's memory. [64] Picard felt a little uncomfortable with Beverly after Jack's death, and when she was assigned as CMO of the Enterprise-D in 2364 he offered her a transfer, which she declined. [1] The two gradually became good friends, and spend a lot of time together - for example having breakfast most mornings. [64] In 2365 Beverly was promoted to Chief of Starfleet Medical, [65] a position which she retained for a year before returning to the Enterprise. [62] Whilst she was away she allowed her son Wesley to remain aboard the ship under the care of the senior officers. [65]
Despite being outside the official chain of command, Beverly took the bridge officer's test and occasionally enjoyed sitting a command shift on the bridge. Late in 2369 she was forced to take temporary command when Captain Picard and all other senior officers engaged in a large away mission; despite her relative lack of experience Beverly was able to destroy a Borg vessel whilst in command. [66]
In 2370 her grandmother died, and Beverly briefly came under the influence of a mysterious energy being who had been preying on the women of her family for centuries. Beverly was forced to kill the being when he threatened her friends. [67] Later in this year Beverly accidentally created a virus which caused ancient segments of the DNA of the Enterprise-D crew to become active, transforming them into various types of animal. Fortunately, Data and Picard were able to reverse the effect, later named Barclays' Protomorphosis Syndrome by Beverly. [68]
When the Enterprise-D was destroyed in 2371, Beverly was transferred to the Enterprise-E with the other senior officers. She remained there as Chief Medical Officer when the ship responded to Shinzon's attempted coup on Romulus in 2379. [23] Subsequently, she and Captain Picard finally admitted the romantic feelings they held for one another and began a relationship. They married in 2380 [69], shortly before the Borg invasion of the Alpha Quadrant in 2381. [69] |
Data [1] |
After graduation Data spent three years as an Ensign followed by "ten or twelve" on varied space duty in the Lieutenant grades. [70] However, he continued to struggle for acceptance. It was not until he arrived on the Enterprise-D that he found himself making true friends. This reinforced his own self-image and encouraged him to stop thinking of himself as 'disposable'. [18]
In 2365 Starfleet Commander Bruce Maddox decided to dismantle Data so he could investigate his function in an attempt to recreate Dr. Soong's work. Data declined the invitation, prompting Maddox to order him to comply. When Data attempted to resign instead, Maddox took the position that Data was the property of Starfleet and so not legally able to resign, a stance disputed by Captain Picard. A landmark legal hearing determined that Data in fact had the right to choose his own destiny. Maddox withdrew the transfer request and Data was allowed to remain on the Enterprise-D. [8] After the loss of the Enterprise-D, Data transferred with the rest of his shipmates to the Enterprise-E where he remained Chief of Operations. Here he participated in the ship's efforts to correct the Borg's alteration of Federation history, where he was briefly tempted by the prospect of becoming partly biological through Borg technology. Data ultimately rejected this prospect and was instrumental in defeating the Borg. [52]
Data continued as operations officer of the Enterprise-E until 2378, when he was to have assumed the First Officer's role after Commander Riker accepted a promotion and transfer. The Enterprise located another Soong android, known as B4, at this time, a prototype for Data himself which was externally identical to him but considerably more simplistic mentally. Data downloaded his memories into B4 in the hope that it would help him to develop. [23]
When the Enterprise-E fought the Scimitar to prevent Praetor Shinzon's attack on Earth shortly before Riker's transfer, Data chose to sacrifice himself in order to destroy the Scimitar and prevent it using its Thalaron radiation weapon on the Enterprise-E. [23]
After the battle, Captain Picard found some reason to hope that at least a portion of Data's memories had indeed become active in the mind of B4. In this sense, at least a little of Data has survived. [23]
By 2385 B4's body was being stored at Daystrom Institute under the care of Bruce Maddox and Agnes Jurati. [29] Unbeknownst to anyone at the time Bruce Maddox had transferred a copy of Data's memories and he and Altan Ingatio Soong used them to produce a massively complex quantum simulation which was able to house a fully operational copy of Data's consciousness. Geordi La Forge [1] |
An only child [71], Geordi La Forge had a rather unsettled early life; both his parents were in Starfleet, his father an exozoologist and his mother a command officer. He would later recall that he was constantly on the move during his childhood, often living with only one parent. He lived with his father whilst he made a study of invertebrates in the Modean system, and later with his mother on an outpost near the Romulan border. [71]
It was only natural that La Forge would enter Starfleet himself, which he did as soon as he was eligible. [72] During his early career he was a pilot on an interplanetary shuttle in the Sol system; it was while here that he first met Captain Picard. Picard would later recall making some offhand comment that a shuttle's engine efficiency was not all that it should be, only to later find that the pilot had spent the whole night refitting the fusion initiators. Picard decided that this was somebody he wanted on his crew, and had Geordi transferred shortly after his appointment as Enterprise-D Captain. [73]
Geordi has been blind from birth [74], but was able to see better than most due to his Visual Input Sensory Organ Replacement - the VISOR. This device scanned a wide range of electromagnetic frequencies and other phenomena and converted it into electrical inputs which it transmitted into Geordi's brain via two small interface devices. The VISOR provided Geordi with the ability to see a large range of phenomena with incredible detail and accuracy, [75] but it caused him constant pain all the time he used it. [1]
In 2370 Geordi's visor was partially responsible for the loss of the Enterprise-D. Dr. Tolian Soran planted a miniaturised camera and transmitter in the device, allowing his accomplices Lursa and B'Etor to discover the ships shield window frequencies by viewing Engineering control panels and so penetrate the shields. [15] Geordi apparently became somewhat disillusioned with the device after this incident, for in 2371 he had his VISOR replaced by a more advanced system comprising Ocular implants - a pair of artificial eyes which replaced his own damaged pair. Like the VISOR, the implants were capable of scanning across a large range of frequencies to give Geordi a unique view of the world. [52]
After the loss of the Enterprise-D Geordi, along with most of the senior crew, transferred to the Enterprise-E. He served on that ship during its fight against the Borg invasion of Sector 001 [52], and later was part of the mission which revealed the Federation-Starfleet plot to displace the Ba'ku people from their home world. While he was on the Ba'ku home world the regenerative properties of the planets rings caused his eyes to re-grow, giving him normal vision for only the second time in his life.#Ref2008}
Geordi continued to serve aboard the Enterprise-E during its mission to meet with the new Romulan Praetor, Shinzon, after his rise to power. He survived the battle with the Scimitar and subsequently took charge of the refit of the Enterprise-E. [23]
Geordi's mother, Silva, took command of the USS Hera in 2369. Unfortunately the ship vanished without trace in the following year and was declared lost. [71] |
Wesley Crusher [1] |
Wesley Crusher was the son of Beverley and Jack Crusher, starfleet officers who were friends of Captain Picard. Jack was killed while under the command of Picard when Wesley was five years old [1], and Wesley had no clear memories of his father. The incident plagued him throughout his life, most especially when he joined his mother on board the USS Enterprise under the command of Picard. [18] Wesley did not blame Picard for his father's death, and came to see the Captain as something of a surrogate father figure. [4]
Wesley was exceptionally bright, most especially in the area of engineering. When the alien being known as the Traveller visited the ship in 2364 he told Captain Picard that Wesley was the Mozart of science, a genius who would accomplish great things in the future. The Traveller urged Picard to allow Wesley the freedom to explore his talents via the ships systems and Picard did this by granting the boy an Acting Ensign field commission. [76]
In 2365 Wesley's mother was transferred to Starfleet Command, but the boy elected to stay on board the ship under the care of the senior officers. [65] They tutored him in the responsibilities of command, assigning him to command a planetary survey in the Selcundi Drama system. Wesley found the experience of commanding officers far more experienced than he a daunting one, but managed to acquit himself well. [19]
Wesley had some difficulty in getting a place at Starfleet Academy [9], but finally managed to sign up in 2367. [4] He joined the prestigious Nova Squadron, but shortly afterwards team member Joshua Albert died in a flight accident. The inquest initially concluded that Albert had caused the accident, based on the testimony of the rest of the team, but it transpired that Nova Squadron had been training to perform the Kolvoord Starburst manoeuvre. This had long been forbidden because of the extreme danger involved; Cadet Nick Locarno was expelled from the Academy and all of the remaining cadets received a formal reprimand on their permanent record and were sent back to repeat their sophomore year. [77]
Wesley became somewhat disenchanted with Starfleet following the accident, and by 2370 he had decided to drop out of training. He found himself drawn to an individual from the Indian culture on Dorvan V, but when Wesley demonstrated unusual abilities the man revealed himself to be the Traveller. He told Wesley that he had gained the ability to control space and time with his mind, and the two departed the Enterprise together. [78]
Wesley Crusher visited Los Angeles in 2024 in order to recruit Kore Soong as a member of the "Travellers". [45] |
Worf Rozhenko [1] |
Worf, son of Mogh, was born in 2340 on the Klingon home world. [79] His father was head of the house of Mogh, one of the most important and powerful of all Klingon houses at the time. Shortly before his seventh birthday Worf's father took him to the Khitomer colony; while they where there the Romulans attacked the colony with the help of a traitor on the surface, killing almost everybody there. Although Mogh himself was killed, Worf survived and was rescued by a Starfleet crewman from the Excelsior class USS Intrepid. When inquiries by Starfleet failed to turn up any direct family for Worf the crewman, a propulsion specialist named Sergei Rozhenko, adopted the child and raised it as his own. [80]
Worf had a difficult childhood; his adoptive parents lived on Gault, a farm colony world [75] with less than 20,000 inhabitants. [80] His parents tried to allow him to find his own middle ground between Human and Klingon culture, but Worf encountered many difficulties. He was regarded as an outsider by other children and was frequently involved in fights. In an attempt to fit in he joined a soccer team, but when he was thirteen he caused the death of an opponent during a match. The experience traumatized Worf; he became a much more restrained person, losing most of his passion for life. [81]
In 2357 Worf joined Starfleet academy, the first Klingon to do so. [75] He graduated in 2361 as an officer, [60] much to the dismay of his non-commissioned father. [14] By 2364 he was a bridge officer on the USS Enterprise-D. [16] With the death of Tasha Yar, Worf was promoted to chief of security on the Federation flagship in 2365. [57]
In 2366 Worf fathered a son with Keylehr, a half-klingon half-human woman who was acting as a Federation negotiator. Keylehr was murdered by Duras, whom Worf killed in turn. [82]
Later in this year evidence was uncovered that it was Worf's father who had betrayed the Klingons at Khitomer. Worf investigated and discovered that it was in fact Duras who had been the traitor; however, the Duras family was still a powerful force in the Klingon Empire with many supporters. Exposing the house to shame risked a civil war, so Worf agreed to take the blame onto his own house and accept discommendation for the good of the Empire. [80] This situation persisted for over a year; late in 2367 the Duras family, now led by Lursa and B'Etor, attempted to seize control of the Klingon Empire before Gowron could be properly installed as Chancellor. Whilst Worf was on board the attack cruiser IKS Bortas he served as a tactical officer during a battle with some vessels loyal to Duras. During the battle Kurn saved the Bortas from destruction; in return for their help Gowron restored the honour of the House of Mogh. [83]
When Starfleet refused to involve itself in what appeared to be an internal matter, Worf chose to resign his commission in order to fight alongside Gowron. [83] Captain Picard discovered indications that the Romulans where supplying military aid to the Duras family; he led a Federation fleet to blockade the Klingon/Romulan border. With their support cut off the Duras family was quickly defeated by Gowron. Once the crisis was past, Worf returned to Starfleet and assumed his old position on the Enterprise-D early in 2368. [59]
In 2371 Worf was promoted to Lieutenant Commander shortly before the Enterprise-D was destroyed. [15] He subsequently took an extended leave to visit the Klingon world of Boreth. Later he was posted to Deep Space Nine, and was involved in the hostilities between the Federation, Klingon Empire and Cardassia which took place at this time. For his actions against the Klingon Empire Gowron once again discommended the House of Mogh. [84]
Whilst on DS9 Worf fell in love with Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax. [85] Despite a somewhat stormy relationship the two where married in 2373 [86], but some months afterwards Dax was murdered by Gul Dukat. [87] Worf struggled with his feelings for Dax when Ezri came to work on the station, but the two eventually agreed to end their relationship and stay friends. [88]
Worf fought in several battles against the Dominion during the war. [89] In the final stages of the war he became disillusioned with Gowron's leadership of the Klingon forces, and challenged him to personal combat. Worf killed Gowron but declined the leadership of the council in favour of General Martok. [90] After the end of the war Martok gained revenge by asking that Worf be appointed as Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire. [91] However, he found himself somewhat unsuited for life as a diplomat and returned to his old post as chief tactical officer of the Enterprise-E. [92] He was in this post when Captain Picard took the ship to Romulus to investigate the new regime after Shinzon's coup. [23] |
Miles Edward O'Brien [16] |
Chief Petty Officer Miles Edward O'Brien is one of the most experienced of Deep Space Nine's crew, with a Starfleet career spanning twenty five years. He joined at the age of eighteen [93] as an enlisted man [14]. As a child he enjoyed building models of all kinds, including ships in bottles [94], model starships [95], and subspace transceivers. [96] His father also made him practice playing the cello every day, and when he was seventeen his father sent a recorded audition to the Aldeberan Music Academy. He was delighted when Miles was accepted, but Miles had second thoughts and joined Starfleet two days before he was due to leave. His father was furious until he realised how badly Miles wanted to join. By 2370 his father was introducing Miles proudly as "Senior Chief Specialist Miles Edward O'Brien." [97]
Early in his career O'Brien served on board the USS Rutledge under Captain Maxwell while that ship was involved in the Setlik massacre. Whilst on Setlik, O'Brien was in a room full of survivors when a Cardassian soldier entered. A woman in the room threw him a phaser which he fired at the Cardassian; unfortunately, the phaser had been set to kill and O'Brien vaporized the man. Up to this time O'Brien had never purposely harmed anything - he was even squeamish about killing insects - and the trauma of the event left him with a deep-seated dislike of the Cardassians who had forced him to become a killer. [6] It was at Setlik that Miles first found that he had an aptitude for engineering; with the Cardassians advancing on his position he managed to repair a field transporter in less than ten minutes and evacuate thirteen men. [98] Miles also displayed his tactical skill when he led two dozen men in a counter-attack against the Barrica encampment, driving out an entire regiment of Cardassian troops. [99]
O'Brien's best friend, Raymond Boone, was captured by the Cardassians during Setlik. Unknown to Starfleet, Boone was actually killed and replaced with a Cardassian agent who had been extensively altered to resemble a human and given a false identity. This Boone later joined the Maquis and framed O'Brien for the theft of photon warheads from DS9. O'Brien was convicted of the crime under the Cardassian legal system, but was released when Commander Sisko threatened to reveal Boone's true identity in order to embarrass the Cardassian government. [100]
O'Brien was a member of the Enterprise-D crew when the ship was launched. [95] He served in various departments, including the conn position [1] and tactical [59] - but he was most commonly found in the transporter room. [18]
His dislike of the Cardassians would rise to the surface when the Enterprise assisted the Cardassians in locating the USS Phoenix after Captain Maxwell began launching unprovoked attacks on their shipping. Maxwell had finally given in to his own hatred of the Cardassians, who he believed were preparing to start another war with the Federation. Miles finally began to deal with his own feelings when he talked Maxwell out of further action. [6]
Whilst aboard the Enterprise Miles met Keiko Ishikawa, a civilian botanist. The two married in 2367 [101] and had their first child the following year. [54]
In 2368 O'Brien transferred to Deep Space Nine as Chief of Operations. [16] Shortly after arriving he received a black mark on his record when he helped a Tosk to escape captivity on the station, violating the Prime Directive. [102] On a visit to Bajor he found himself being forced to assume the position of Sirah, religious leader of a Bajoran village community, when the previous holder of the title died whilst he was visiting. Fortunately he was able to quickly pass the post on to somebody else. [103]
In 2370 Miles was abducted by the Paradans whilst assisting in the setting up of a peace conference. An identical replicant was substituted for him whilst he was held captive. The replicant had all of O'Brien's memories and personality, and actually believed he was the real thing. The Deep Space Nine crew engaged in an elaborate deception to play along with the substitution whilst they investigated, but the replicant became suspicious. Thinking that everybody else had been subverted in some way he made his way back to the Paradan home world where he managed to find the original Miles before being killed. [96]
O'Brien is one of the few Starfleet personnel to maintain a successful marriage, although his relationship with Keiko has often been strained badly by the pressures of living and working on Deep Space Nine. [104] Keiko eventually accepted a position on a botanical survey team on Bajor, and the two lived apart for some time. [105]
Like many Deep Space Nine personnel, O'Brien initially disliked Doctor Bashir. In 2370 the Kellerun and T'Lani attempted to murder the two after they helped to destroy the Harvester weapons which the species had developed. Both sides hoped to destroy the knowledge of how to build the weapons by killing all those involved with both their original construction and their eventual destruction. O'Brien and Bashir grew closer during the incident. [106] They eventually grew to be good friends, sharing many hours playing racquetball [107] and darts [108] and recreating events such as the Battle of Britain [84] and the Battle of the Alamo in Quark's holosuites. [109]
O'Brien was killed in 2371 when a bizarre set of circumstances caused him to repeatedly jump through time. Another, apparently identical O'Brien from an alternate timeline took his place and has continued to serve on the station ever since. [110]
Miles' second child was almost killed before birth when Keiko suffered an accident whilst in a Runabout. Doctor Bashir was able to save the child by beaming it to Major Kira's womb, where it gestated [111] before being born in 2373. [112] In 2374 O'Brien was holidaying with his family on the planet Golana when his daughter Molly fell through an ancient time portal. He was able to get her back through the portal, but inaccuracies in the device meant that the Molly who returned was ten years older. Molly found it impossible to readjust to life on the station, so O'Brien returned her to the portal and sent her back through again. She emerged just an instant after her earlier self arrived, and sent the child straight back through. The original version of Molly was thus returned, but the older version erased herself from history with this action. [113]
Miles and Dax implemented Rom's idea for a field of cloaked self-replicating mines to prevent Dominion ships from coming through the Bajoran Wormhole in 2373, an action which sparked the Dominon war. He fought many battles during the war, either aboard the Defiant or in ground combat. Miles was frustrated by the Dominion's initial success in the war and was glad to be able to strike a blow against the Founders by destroying a Ketracel White production facility using a captured Dominion warship. [114] He would go on to participate in many of the decisive battles of the war, most notably including the mission to retake Deep Space Nine [115], the invasion of the Chin'toka system [87], the attack on the Monac shipyards [116], the later retreat from that system [117], and the eventual advance on Cardassia itself. [118] He also served at least one mission for Starfleet Intelligence in which he penetrated the Orion Syndicate on Farius Prime thanks to a friendship he struck up with Liam Bilby. The Syndicate was working with the Dominion to assassinate the Klingon ambassador, a mission O'Brien was able to prevent. He also uncovered a Dominion agent within Starfleet thanks to information from Bilby. [119] Miles would eventually travel to New Sydney to locate Bilby's widow, worried that the Syndicate might blame her for her husband's failure. He fell foul of the Syndicate himself whilst on the planet, but Ezri Dax was able to use her family connections on the planet to secure his release. [120]
Miles felt that his friends had drifted apart during the conflict, distancing themselves as a way of protecting against the possibility that they might lose friends. The death of Lisa Cusak made him rethink this, and he appealed to his friends to provide more emotional support to one another. [121]
In 2375 Miles was offered a teaching post at Starfleet Academy once the war ended. He accepted, and soon after the final battle of the war the O'Brien family left Deep Space Nine for good. [91] |
Reginald Barclay [122] |
A talented engineer, Lieutenant Barclay was nevertheless a deeply shy and introverted person. He compensated for this by engaging in fanciful holodeck programmes where he would work out his frustrations on caricatures of his shipmates. Unfortunately, this practice gradually became more and more addictive for Barclay and as a result his work suffered. Unable to deal with his constant lateness and poor work, his Captain on the USS Zhukov gave Barclay an excellent recommendation in an attempt to have the problem transferred off the ship. Barclay went to the Enterprise-D, where he continued to live out his fantasy life at the cost of his work. [122]
While on the Enterprise, Barclay's superiors discovered what he had been doing in the holodeck. He agreed to submit to therapy with Counselor Troi, and gradually weaned himself away from the worst aspects of his problem and increased his self confidence a little. [122]
Although addicted to one aspect of modern technology, Barclay was terrified of another; he suffered from a debilitating fear of the transporter. He went his whole Starfleet career without using a transporter once, until in 2369 the Enterprise-D was assigned to investigate an accident on board the USS Yosemite. Barclay refused to take part in the away team as it would have involved transporting to the ship. He managed to control his fear enough to use the transporter but when he observed what appeared to be a life form within the transporter beam, Barclay became convinced that he was suffering hallucinations as a result of transporter psychosis, a rare condition experienced by some users of the technology in its early days. [123]
Barclay forced himself to re-enter the transporter and grabbed the life form he had seen before. When he rematerialised he found himself clutching a member of the missing Yosemite crew, who had been thrown into subspace by an accident on the ship. The Enterprise-D crew were subsequently able to rescue the remaining members of the crew from subspace. [123]
His hypochondria recurred in 2370, when he became convinced he was suffering from Terellian Death Syndrome. Dr. Crusher diagnosed a mild case of urodelean flu and injected a synthetic T cell to fight the infection. Unfortunately, the treatment caused some of Barclay's introns to mutate and infect the rest of the crew, causing them to 'de-evolve' into earlier forms. The condition, which became known as Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome, was eventually cured and the crew returned to normal. [68]
Barclay transferred off the Enterprise-D before it was lost, moving to Jupiter Station to assist Dr. Zimmerman in the development of the Emergency Medical Hologram project. Barclay worked on the EMH's interpersonal skills, which may provide at least a partial explanation of the program's unpopularity with its patients. [124] In 2372 he briefly joined the Enterprise-E, where he served during the Borg attack on Sector 001. He achieved one of his great ambitions by meeting Zefram Cochrane, the inventor of warp drive, when the ship travelled back in time to 2063. [52]
Barclay subsequently became fascinated with the story of the USS Voyager's struggle to return to Earth from the Delta Quadrant and by 2376 he had left the Enterprise-E to join the Pathfinder project which was attempting to contact the lost Starship. To assist in his efforts, Barclay created a holographic representation of Voyager and its crew. Unfortunately it seemed that his holoaddiction began to recur as he spent more and more time in the program. When Barclay became convinced that the close approach of a pulsar to the MIDAS array would allow him to open up a wormhole to Voyager, his superior at the project was unconvinced. Barclay's increasingly desperate attempts to convince him merely made it appear that he was undergoing a nervous breakdown. Barclay broke into the facility and attempted to establish contact against orders, evading a security team just long enough to get a weak reply from the stranded Starship. With the success of his efforts, Barclay was reinstated and given permission to pursue the technology. This allowed regular contact with Voyager for a brief period each month. [125]
Barclay continued his work on Pathfinder, helping the Voyager EMH when he was transmitted from Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant to assist in the treatment of his creator, Doctor Zimmerman. [126] Later Barclay tried to send a hologram of himself to Voyager, but this attempt failed due to the interference of some Ferengi who were trying to kidnap Seven of Nine in order to steal her nanoprobes. [127] |
Doctor Katherine Pulaski [65] |
Pulaski was Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise-D in 2365. [65] Pulaski admired Data as an artificial device, but did not feel that he qualified as a true life form equal to biological life such as Humans. She once challenged Data to solve a truly original mystery in the style of his favourite detective, Sherlock Holmes. Although Data initially made a poor start, he did begin to demonstrate a more genuinely creative approach to the mystery. Unfortunately the test was cut short because an accidental command from Geordi to the ship's computer had created an opponent capable of threatening the ship itself. [128]
Whilst visiting the Darwin genetic research facility on Gagarin IV Pulaski was exposed to genetically engineered children. She thereby contracted a disease whose symptoms closely resembled rapid ageing. The transporter was able to cure her of the disease - ironic as Pulaski had always been dubious about using the device. [129] Pulaski was a long time friend of Kyle Riker, father of Will. She was his doctor after he was badly injured in a Tholian attack in 2353. The two developed a romantic attachment, and Pulaski later said that she would have married him if he had asked. She later married three other men, and although she divorced all three she said that she remained good friends with all of them. [51] She was fond of Klingon love poetry, and once took part in the Klingon tea ceremony after taking an antidote for the highly poisonous tea. [130] |
Name |
Description |
Alans [19] |
A member of the crew of the Enterprise-D during 2365, Ensign Alans worked under acting Ensign Crusher on a planetary survey. Crusher found it difficult to give orders to an officer who was more experienced than he was, but managed the survey successfully in the end. Alans was married to Ensign Hildebrant. [19] |
Ensign Tess Allenby [18] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew, Allenby was the helm officer when the ship towed a radioactive waste carrier away from Gamelan V. [4] She also served on the ship when it was threatened by a swarm of two dimensional beings. [131] |

A member of the Enterprise-D crew, Brooks was a patient of Counsellor Troi after the death of her husband. Troi was able to help her in spite of being without her empathic sense at the time. [131] |
Chief Brossmer [73] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew, Brossemer was a transporter chief when the ship lent assistance to a Romulan vessel which had undergone an accident in 2368. She attempted to beam La Forge and Ro off the ship, which resulted in their being out of phase with normal matter for a short period. [73] |
Ensign Brower [132] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew, Brower was aboard the ship when it investigated the failure of the Argus Array and encountered the Cytherian probe in 2367. [132] |
Lieutenant Burke [46] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew in 2365, Burke was tactical officer on the ship whilst it was involved with wargames with the USS Hathaway. [46] |
Ensign Maddy Calloway [136] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew, Calloway was romantically involved with Lieutenant Kwan. In a hallucination prompted by an empathic signature imprinted on part of the ship, Troi believed that Lieutenant Worf was having an affair with Calloway after beginning a relationship with her. [136] |
Joe Carey [137] |
An Starfleet officer who served aboard the USS Enterprise-D [138] and the USS Voyager, [137] Carey lost out to B'Elanna Torres for the Chief Engineer's job. [139] Although he disliked Torres - who assaulted him on one occasion - Carey worked hard to support her in the job and was a valuable assistant. [139] He was killed in 2377 during a hostage situation on an alien planet, ironically just a few months before Voyager made it back to Earth. [140] |
Lieutenant Casta [122] |
A member of the Enterprise-D crew in 2366, Casta was one of Geordi La Forge's engineering staff. [122] |
Assistant Engineer Clancy [18] |
Clancy was a member of the Enterprise-D crew in 2365. She worked for Geordi La Forge in the engineering department. [128] She also served on the ship during the mission to deal with a Klingon ship whose crew had been in hibernation for 75 years and still believed that they were at war with the Federation; by this point she had transferred to become a bridge officer, serving at the helm station. [141] |
Ensign Collins [142] |

Ro Laren was born on Bajor on the 17th of January 2340 to Ro Gale and Ro Talia. [73] She had a typical Bajoran upbringing, scavenging for food in one of the refugee camps her people were forced into by the Cardassian occupation. At an early age she was forced to watch as the Cardassians tortured her father to death. She was determined not to continue living in the camps, regarding the people who accepted them as having accepted defeat at Cardassian hands – something she vowed she would never do. [142] She joined Starfleet 2358, graduating in 2362. [183] She served aboard the USS Wellington, where she participated in a disastrous mission which led to several deaths. Ro was blamed for the tragedy, and imprisoned in the Garon II stockade. [142]
Whilst there Ro was offered a chance for release by Admiral Kennelly, on the condition that she participate in a mission to investigate Bajoran terrorist activity by the Enterprise-D. Unknown to Captain Picard, Kennelly was trying to expose the Bajoran terrorists so that the Cardassians could murder them all. Ro confessed her role in the plot to Picard, who exposed the Admiral. Afterwards Picard offered Ro a chance to serve aboard the Enterprise-D, which she accepted. [142]
She flourished on the Enterprise-D, though her abrasive personality frequently caused considerable friction – most especially with Commander Riker, her immediate superior. Despite this, when the two lost their memories as a result of the Satarran weapon they developed a romantic attachment to one another. Riker was highly embarrassed by this afterwards, much to the amusement of Ro and Deanna Troi. [60]
Ro underwent something of a spiritual crisis on stardate 45092.4, when she and Geordi La Forge were both placed into a phased state by a transporter accident in the vicinity of a Romulan phase cloak device. Unable to interact with normal matter or to be seen by anybody else, Ro came to believe that she had died and was existing in some form of spirit state. Although the truth was eventually revealed, Ro commented that she had come to re-evaluate some of her spiritual beliefs in light of the experience. [73]
She had another benchmark experience on stardate 46235.7, when another transporter accident regressed her apparent physical age by some twenty years. She was highly resistant to being a child again, remembering the difficulties of her original childhood. However, under the influence of Guinan Ro did eventually manage to accept her new state and allowed herself to experience some of the freedoms and joys of childhood before being returned to normal. [184]
Ro enrolled in Starfleet’s advanced tactical training course, where she began to hear of the existence of the Maquis – a group of Federation terrorists fighting against the Cardassian presence in the de-militarised zone between Cardassia and the Federation. Ro had a great deal of sympathy for the Maquis, and her loyalties were divided when she graduated from advanced training and was assigned to infiltrate the Maquis and lead them into a trap. She felt a great sense of loyalty to Captain Picard because of the role he had played in rehabilitating her after her earlier incarceration, but ultimately she could not betray the Maquis and left to join them.
