This continues on from Dark Passions - Book One, in that it further expands on the internal politics of the Cardassian-Klingon Alliance, and the sort of things that can happen in the background of interstellar politics when only those higher in the pecking order prevents those lower on the ladder from flying at one anothers throats. A must read for all interested in the Mirror Universe. |

This is a great book in that it attempts to deal with an area of Star Trek lore that hasn't really been explored before, the formation of the Federation and Starfleet, as well as some of the Earth/Romulan War itself. Despite that it has been rendered largely moot by the new series, Enterprise, it is still a fascinating read, as this book suggests that the infamous Dadeulus class starship wasn't produced until some time after Starfleet was formed. Another new idea was that there was some debate about the nature of Starfleet, military or scientific, which isn't too surprising, when one considers that at least one of the founding members had just been through a war, and that some of the others were involved in conflicts also during the years leading up to the founding of the Federation, although that wasn't covered in the book. When all is said and done, I suggest that you read the book and decide which take you prefer the most, the Enterprise television series or the books on the founding of the FEderation. |

This book gives a brief overview of some of the major classes of ships from the Original Series to The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine to Voyager, and does a pretty good job of it too. It covers some of the major ships from Starfleet, as well as the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians, as well as a number of Delta Quadrant powers, including the Borg and the Malon. About my only real gripe about this book is that it only covers thirty vessels, I feel that it should cover far more, particularly more of the vessels used by the Dominion and the Borg, as the book only covers one vessel each for these two great powers, the Attack Ship and the Queens Yacht. |
